Daily Motivational Tips to Get in Shape
What getting in shape isn’t!
There is so much touted about weight loss, how you must know this secret or that, the latest scientific discovery etc it is daunting. At a biochemical level though, the mechanics of weight loss have not changed because they are inbuilt within our genetics and functioning.
This sounds simple on the surface but with two thirds of the population overweight it suggests a big difference between the “knowledge” of how to get in shape and the application/reality of what the body needs to get in shape. So here are a few things that weight loss IS NOT:
- Simply about eating as little as possible – While on the surface of things eating less food sounds a good idea. However, if you drop food intake too low then you will greatly promote hunger and cravings which will inevitably cause you to overeat, esecially if willpower is a low at the time. The idea is to reduce your food intake to get results but not to a level so low it promotes strong hunger or cravings.
- Going low fat – If this was the case then why hasn’t your low fat ‘healthy diet’ got you your results yet? Fat consumption in this day and age, especially saturated fat is much less now than 50 years back but take a look at our waist lines. Drop the notion that eating low fat is the way to go as evidence in the real world says the opposite. At the same time that doesn’t mean you should go out and start eating blocks of lard but a super low fat diet will promote hunger and cravings.
- About how much exercise you do – Get down any gym and you will see 5-6 days a week exercisers fat and out of shape. Nutrition is the key to results and when in that is in place exercise accelerates results. However, if nutrition is not in place you will struggle to get anywhere.
- Exercise-Food-Motivation for results – Most people focus on getting results in this order. The problem is that exercise is secondary to food and what to eat is determined by your knowledge and your ability to follow what you should actually do. This means that without your attempt being Mind-Nutrition-exercise you will struggle long term. The pathetic long term success rates of exercise and diets suggest this statistic to be true.
- Going No Carb – The fashion now is no carb is the way to go to get in shape. While this is great in theory the reality is that most people cannot stick to it and some body types need a higher carb diet so it is even worse for them. Your body will guide you with the level of carb intake for optimal results.
Mind-body change exercise
- Examine each one of the principles above.
- What do you believe in this area? Why do you believe it? And what evidence do you rely on to believe this?
- How do you know that you are right?
- What if you are wrong?
