Motivational Tips to Get in Shape

The Anatomy of Binge Eating

Almost everyone suffers from binge eating to some degree. While it may not match the clinical definition, to me binge eating is simply eating more than you should do. This may be a way of saying I pigged out at a dinner party, I had a crazy weekend or just went a bit overboard on the chocolates at work today. Call it what you want but the process is similar and every one of us does it with food and/or drink to some degree. Some points on binge eating:

  • Most people seem to have a rough limit they stick to before they stop. This may be 6 chocolate bars, 2 cakes, 1 bottle of wine etc. There does not seem to be much of a pattern about how much one person has compared to another nor how one person classifies it as too much. For example, one person may feel they binged on two chocolate bars while another thinks 2 chocolate bars mid afternoon is a normal part of their day.
  • Binge eating often strikes when you experience an emotional craving to eat alongside a nutritional craving.
  • You can rest assured during times of a binge eat you will not even remember about your health and fitness goals.
  • A binge eat is basically a response to cope with excessive emotions. It is highly related to feeling a loss of hope. The greater the loss the larger the feeling of despair and the greater the binge. This is to try and suppress the feelings. The reason this loss of hope often happens is because the emotions are to do with events from the past or concerns in the future. They apparently cannot be changed which creates a loss of hope (A point to note is the emotions can be changed using EFT as well as through deepening your understanding around thought itself)
  • The “I have blown it attitude” greatly exacerbates a binge eat. If you have this false belief in your mind that you will never eat another bad food when you get back on the wagon, the moment you break this pact you will try to eat as much as possible because when you decide to start again and cut out the troublesome foods you will surely succeed this time and thus never eat it again.
  • Some binge eating episodes are simply the body making up for too little food in the diet. This comes from the result of under eating and/or not enough carbs.

Mind body change exercise

  • When you are binging on foods what seems to be the general quantities? Why do you use this amount to feel satisfied?
  • What can you do to restore hope in times when you want to binge? How can you manage the emotions without eating?
  • Look at your behaviours regarding this troublesome food and your attempts to never eat it again. Can you find a way you can achieve a balance on this food so it doesn’t have to be all or nothing yet allows you to attain results? If this food is too much of a trigger food right now then what could you substitute it with which would retain balance?
