Daily Motivation TipsHow to reduce food consumption

It is never a bad thing to eat less and reduce food consumption as it lessens the demand we put on our environment and also saves you money. It may also help your waist line but that depends on many other factors too. (In general, calories consumed has little influence on body fat). To reduce food consumption look to:

1) Become completely accustomed to not finishing the food on your plate -Personally I rarely finish a plate of food. I throw on the food, eat what I need and move on to do my daily tasks and then eat the rest later. To become used to this start by leaving a tiny amount of food at the end of every meal. Then increase in size until you are at ease with not finishing your plate.

2) Get into the routine of having different helpings – Take what you want and then go back for more if needed. As opposed to filling that plate sky high and waging a war of willpower in a quest to finish it.

3) Save what you do not eat! – Without this one the above two do not work. Whatever you do not eat then put in the fridge to eat later.

4) Get your ideal fuel mix right! – The best way to control hunger and reduce consumption of foods yet still give your body all that it needs is to eat a meal with the right amounts of protein to carbohydrates to fats for your body. This is called your ideal fuel mix.

5) Forget the link between cost and consumption – Many people finish a food because they have paid for it. Remember that once it is on the plate it is done and dusted, paid for or not. You will not have anymore or any less money in the bank whether you eat it or not. The key to economic eating is reducing post eating hunger and cravings as in point (4) and saving whatever you do not eat.

6) Avoid specific foods you should eat but actually never do – Sometimes we like to put a food on our plate because we know we should eat it. More often than not you find you eat everything else but this one food! Experiment in finding other foods you should eat which give similar contributions to your health but are ones that you actually will finish.

Mind change exercise

  • Look at your current behaviour patterns. Do you always finish your plate? Do you save the leftovers?
  • Create ways you can start saving food and minimizing wastage.
