Daily Motivational Tips to Get in Shape
Dealing with defeat
Let us consider the subject of what you do when your best intentions go awry. I remember reading once how “The best way to deal with defeat is to never lose.” I certainly like the ethos but in the real world success will always be determined by how you respond to defeat. You can see some of the defeats people have in their health and fitness when you get roped into a boozy lunch, or decide it would be a good idea to see if you could actually eat a whole pack of biscuits in one go. The question to ask in these situations is how will I / do I deal with defeat?
In a short fitness challenge there is no reason why you should need to break from the plan. It is perfectly manageable if you are getting the meal ratios right etc. During long term behaviours and life patterns at some point you will ‘mess up’ and then what? The most important thing to do when you mess up is:
Ask why it happened in the first place?
There is no such thing as a wrong behaviour. You can do whatever you like, however, some behaviours will produce poor results in certain aspects of your life. Spending more money than you earn will not allow you to be rich nor will eating whenever you are emotional guide you into being in amazing shape.
When things fall apart most people are so busy shouting at themselves for being an idiot that they miss out on vital bits of information!!! As there are no wrong behaviours in life, when you are next eating a cake or drinking some beers instead of beating yourself up, trying to convince everyone else you are cool or whatever else you do just say to yourself “ It is ok I am doing this, I am a good person, but why I am doing it?”
This is the only long term approach to getting results. The answers will point you on the path to find that solution you have been waiting many years for! Ironically when you start doing this you will see that many of your eating binges are simply a retaliation to your own self enforced limits.
When you understand why you are doing something you can find a solution. If the answer was because “I like it” then you are looking to add simple pleasures to life, if it is because you were bored then you were trying to add excitement, if it because you were craving sugar check your nutrition intake. The more you gently question your behaviours the closer you will get to the answers. If you catch yourself before your behaviours go awry then a good question to always ask yourself is
“What would I need in my life to not do this right now?”
When you start asking the why’s before and after the moments of negative behaviours you will gain some amazing insights that may just make dramatic changes in your behaviour. If a blow out reveals a true cause and provides a solution then you can celebrate that moment of insight.
Mind-body change exercise
- The next time you are about to let you behaviours go awry simply ask yourself – “What would I need in my life to not do this behaviour right now?”
- Look back to your recent incidents of bad behaviour. What would you have needed to do to have prevented them from happening?
- Using your answers how can you provide this in your life to prevent this happening again?
