Change Your Thinking – Change Your Shape
Daily motivation Tips – The reasons why you do not enjoy exercise
It is very common for people to curse and swear that exercise is not for them or how they do not enjoy it. The problem is to get into awesome shape, you will most likely have to do exercise in some form or other to encourage your body along. If you are going to maintain your exercise programme for any sort of duration then you must find a way to make it enjoyable. A good place to start on this is looking at why most people do not enjoy it at the moment.
1) Do not know what they are doing – If you are not confident in your knowledge about what you are doing then you certainly wouldn’t want to be doing it…..and if there are other people ‘watching you’ then even less so! Anyone can learn how to do exercise and to be confident of how to do it. As long as you feel confused, self conscious or unsure about what to do it is almost impossible to enjoy the exercise. The solution is to either team up with someone in the know, join a class or hire someone to teach you what to do.
2) Feel they have something better to be doing / resent it – If you feel exercise is less important than seeing your children then you will either see the kids or resent strongly the exercise for stealing you away from them. The answer is of course to combine the two activities or understand that you being in shape would be the biggest gift you could ever give your family. It is vital you understand that exercise merits time devoted to do it. Many out of shape people feel they should not have to do exercise and resent it as part of getting in shape. All people in great shape think it is an absolute honour to be able to do it and do it simply because they enjoy it.
3) Do it wrong – If you are still smashing out brutal sessions so that you leave the gym close to death, or do 1-2 hour plus sessions, exercise through ‘bad exercise pains’ – then you will never sustain the plan long term. You will have good periods followed by awful periods. The key around this is knowing that exercise never has a minimum intensity nor minimum volume when viewed as a long term behaviour pattern. The key is to keep coming back and use subtle programme variations (periodization) to help your body respond. If you exercise with bad pains then you are simply being stupid (bad pain = Joint pain or any pain that causes more harm to the body than good).
4) Can’t afford it – If point two above has taken hold you will not divert the necessary funds to fitness. Price really is not an obstacle because there are millions of web pages on Google and You Tube with free home training plans.
5) Self conscious – Being self conscious is often based on the belief that others are watching you which in my experience is not the case. Most people are too busy worrying about others watching them to be watching you or they prefer to watch themselves in the mirror (I am certainly guilty of that one!). Self consciousness is usually always linked to not knowing what to do as well. If you are self conscious then you need to work on your exercise knowledge and the emotions behind this. Then develop what it is to allow you to train freely. Alternatively, simply change the environment where you train.
6) Scared it will help achieve your goal – Plenty of people have so many fears about being successful that the belief exercise will take them there is enough to stop them doing it. When doing the exercise the underlying fear that i may bring success may resonate with you in the form of disliking the exercise.
7) Find it boring – Plenty of people find exercise boring. To get around this problem you have to tune into what types of exercise you enjoy doing. As most people just spend 45 minutes on some cardio equipment it does not surprise me they find it boring. I love exercise but I couldn’t force myself to do that. The key is tuning into what you enjoy. I hate running on a treadmill, don’t mind jogging outside yet love sprinting. When you try different training types you will always find something that inspires you whether it is from dancing to martial arts to weight lifting. The key is to tune into what your mind-body likes. This of course links into point 1 about confidence and knowledge to try new things.
